is a small city southwest of Phoenix, divided by the (usually dry) Agua Fria River
running north to south and I-10
east to west. A fair amount of the land is agricultural, especially south of the interstate; to the north are several upscale residential estates, two (Crystal Gardens and Garden Lakes) centered on a series of artificial lakes. The main shopping area is on the east side of town near the intersection with Loop 101 (between I-10 exits 133 and 134); hotels are located one mile west, in a rural setting. The center of Avondale lies to the southwest, one mile from Phoenix Goodyear Airport
and 17 miles from downtown Phoenix
. The town is just five miles from the start of open desert, and is close to three scenic mountain ranges - White Tank Mountains to the west, Sierra Estrella to the south and South Mountains
to the southeast.
