Peoria is a northwest suburb of Phoenix, bordered by Glendale to the east and Sun City to the west, centered along US 60 which crosses the south side of the city, intersecting Loop 101. This region is densely developed, with many housing estates and business parks, but the city boundaries extend a long way north, across several more upscale and recently constructed residential districts, to a sizeable expanse of as yet undeveloped land, ending at the far side of Lake Pleasant in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains. This lake is one of the most popular attractions near Phoenix, offering many recreation facilities surrounded by pristine desert scenery. The recently constructed Loop 303 freeway is intended to provide a focal point for new development in the northern reaches of the city.
The main commercial area in Peoria, with shopping and hotels, is around Arrowhead Mall, near the Bell Road intersection of Loop 101; this is also the location of Peoria Sports Complex, a major baseball facility.
