Thatcher adjoins the larger city of Safford to the east; both are situated in the wide upper valley of the Gila River and reached by US 70 between Globe (74 miles) and Lordsburg, NM (78 miles). 10,713 foot Mount Graham dominates the southern skyline, while the Gila Mountains rise to lesser heights to the north. Eastern Arizona College is located in the town center but there are few facilities nearby; the main shops and hotels in the area are found to the east, in semi-rural surroundings along the highway to Safford.
