Named after a huge silver nugget found here in the 1870s, Globe remains an active mining town, bordered to the west by a huge, open-pit copper mine and smelting plant, in the adjacent town of Miami. The developed part of Globe extends for seven miles along the main road (US 60), and it includes a sizable historic district, with several dozen buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of these are located along the south end of Broad Street, near the single track of the Arizona Eastern Railway, which links the town with the main Union Pacific line at Clifton. Most hotels, shops and other facilities in Globe are a little way east of the center, near the junction of US 60 with US 70 from Safford.

Popular attractions nearby, all within 30 miles, include Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Theodore Roosevelt Lake, Tonto National Monument and the edge of the Superstition Mountains.

The Holiday Inn Express is the easternmost hotel in Globe, built on the south side of US 70 just south of the US 60 intersection, part of a hilly, mostly residential neighborhood. This location is one mile from the edge of the Tonto National Forest and 33 miles from Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The 72 room/suite hotel serves free hot buffet breakfast, and is just down the street from one restaurant and a short walk from many more, either side of the highway junction. Open early 2015 after renovation of an existing property, the Best Western hotel in Globe, AZ, is situated just a little way east of the downtown region, along South Street, just off highway US 60. The historic buildings at the center of Globe, including the US Post Office and the Federal Court, are within walking distance of the inn, as are a selection of small shops and restaurants. On the western approach to Globe, the Travelodge enjoys a prominent location, a little way above the surroundings and the main road (US 60), bordered by undeveloped desert to the north and with good views west to the mountains of the Tonto National Forest. The intersection with Hwy 188 is a few blocks west, adjacent to the golf course of Corre Valley Country Club; this road leads to Tonto National Monument and Theodore Roosevelt Lake.
