Oro Valley has a pleasant location beside the western foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, along Hwy 77 a few miles north of Tucson. The land slopes down very gently to the west, where many upscale residences have been built in recent years, many overlooking the greens and fairways of the five golf clubs in this area. The quiet back streets pass numerous patches of as yet undeveloped ground, still home to the same flourishing desert vegetation that can be seen in Catalina State Park, adjoining Oro Valley on the far side of Hwy 77.
Most shops, restaurants and hotels are also located along the main road, two centers being Oro Valley Retail at the 1st Avenue intersection and Oro Valley Marketplace at Tangerine Road.
