Picacho Peak, Arizona

Picacho Peak is an ancient summit, a former volcano, rising 1,500 feet above the surrounding Sonoran Desert plains - alongside Interstate 10 in south Arizona, about half way between Casa Grande and Tucson. The state park containing the peak has a scenic campground and several day use areas, but the main attraction is the two mile trail to the top of the mountain. Cables and railings are required in some places, taking the path up particularly steep sections.
