The grossulariaceae (gooseberry) family contains just one genus, ribes, notable for its edible currants. There are around 150 secies in total, about a third of which occur in the US, the majority in the West. Plants are spiny shrubs, with much-branched stems, small, simple, lobed, clustered, alternate leaves, and clusters of up to 25 flowers growing at the leaf nodes. Flowers are radially symmetric, with five petals, five smaller petals, five stamens and two styles.
