Nearby are various shops, restaurants and other hotels, plus the Kern River, which has a pleasant footpath running both ways along the edge. The onsite restaurant is open all day (room service available); other food/beverage outlets are Starbuck's Kiosk and Club Odyssey a lively bar with live music or entertainment at the weekends. The hotel also boasts the largest ballroom in Bakersfield, part of 14,500 sq ft of meeting space.

Bakersfield's handsome new Holiday Inn is part of a recent area of development next to the Kern River along Marriott Drive, a short road with several other hotels, close to highways 58 and 99, towards the northwest edge of Bakersfield and a mile south of the town of Oildale. Amenities at the full service Holiday Inn include an outdoor pool, gift shop, modern fitness center, American-style restaurant (open for breakfast, lunch, dinner & all-day room service) and 1,700 sq ft of meeting space. The Courtyard hotel in Bakersfield is one component of the main lodging area in town, around the Rosedale Hwy junction of Route 99, and it has a quiet site on a side road (Marriott Drive) away from the highway, backing on to the Kern River. Two miles west of Bakersfield city center, the Hilton Garden Inn is a modern, fully-featured hotel of 120 rooms and 2,105 sq ft of meeting space, located in a quiet neighborhood on the north side of the Kern River, near the Rosedale Highway exit of CA 99. The first TownePlace Suites hotel in Bakersfield opened 2016, adding to the range of all-suite lodging in the city. The four floor, 95 room property is located away in a district previously lacking any hotels, 4 miles west of downtown close to Hwy 58, though situated along a quiet side road. Nearby are a number of large stores (Walmart, BestBuy, Petco, Target, Home Depot), and many restaurants. Since its opening in 2007, SpringHill Suites Bakersfield has come to be regarded by many as the best hotel in town, because of the comfortable beds, spacious rooms, friendly staff, reasonable rates and the good quality free breakfast. Located right next to another Marriott property (Courtyard), the hotel is just off Highway 99, the main road through Bakersfield, and about 2 miles from the downtown area. Accommodation comprises 119 suites, 25% larger then the average hotel room, that contain such amenities as a microwave, refrigerator, large work desk and ironing facilities. Ramada Bakersfield North is a medium sized (80 room), interior corridor hotel, adjacent to Hwy 58/99 though shielded from it by a line of trees - access is from Real Road, one block west. The three floor building is part of a typical collection of fast food restaurants, small shops and other motels, 2 miles west of the city center. Guests are within walking distance of Bakersfield Plaza, which has several larger stores, and more restaurants. All accommodations are studio suites, most featuring a full kitchen; all have at least a microwave & refrigerator, plus a sofa bed. The usual two complimentary amenities of wi-fi and continental breakfast are provided. North-facing rooms overlook the outdoor pool, hot tub and a small garden.

The Holiday Inn Express is the northernmost hotel in Bakersfield, 2 miles west of the airport and 6 miles from the city center, part of a small business district at the Quinn Road exit of Hwy 99, close to the edge of open farmland. Holiday Inn Express Bakersfield has a southerly location near the suburbs of Wible Orchard and Venola - one block southeast of exit 21 (White Lane) of highway 99. This is quite a large hotel with 108 east or west-facing rooms on 4 floors, in a mostly residential district but close to various restaurants and shops along White Lane. For leisure, the Express has an outdoor pool at the rear, a whirlpool, putting green and baseball court. Complimentary buffet breakfast is provided to all guests.

The Best Western Heritage Inn serves travelers along interstate 5 - the 47 room hotel is right next to exit 253, the Stockdale Highway, which reaches Bakersfield 15 miles east. Nearby are a couple of restaurants and a gas station, but otherwise the hotel is surrounded by flat farmland of the Central Valley. Nearby sites of interest include the Kern River, Buena Vista Lake and the Tule Elk State Reserve. The hotel has an outdoor pool and serves free continental breakfast.

The Fairfield Inn in north Bakersfield (open summer 2017), has a quiet location along a side road near exit 31 of Hwy 99, 1.5 miles from Meadows Field Airport. Comfort Suites Bakersfield is one of a group of hotels along Camino Del Rio Court/Marriott Lane, close to the northwest edge of the city beside the 99/178 highway junction. Rooms at the all suite property contain a microwave, refrigerator, cable TV with HBO, ironing facility and coffee maker. Amenities include free continental breakfast, fitness center, business center, hot tub, and swimming pool. The property reopened spring 2011 after a full renovation.
