The best overall view of the sandstone formations of Coal Mine Canyon is from the end of a narrow promontory about 1/4 mile from the southern edge - several miles of the ravine can be seen, from the jagged pinnacles and ridges around the upper end to the smoother, more open land in the distance to the north, where the ravine opens out to a large area of pastel-colored badlands. The canyon is located 16 miles southeast of Tuba City on the Navajo Indian Reservation.
