The strelitziaceae family contains only three genera and seven species, all occurring in tropical areas; none are native to the US, but strelitzia reginae has escaped cultivation and can be seen growing wild in some areas. Plants are tall herbs or trees, with large, alternate leaves and specialized, unusually-shaped flowers, formed of three sepals and three petals, not easily distinguished.
