Previous PhotoEchinocereus stramineus - strawberry cactus, along the Marufo Vega TrailNext Photo

Found in most areas of Big Bend from the low deserts to mountain slopes up to 5,000 feet, echinocereus stramineus forms large clumps up to 3 feet across, and produces particularly large and colorful flowers in spring. Spines are long, light brown (red at the growing tip), and densely packed, nearly obscuring the green stems.
