The summit of Independence Rock looks out over many square miles of flat prairie, dotted with a few other isolated hills including Sentinel Rocks and the Granite Mountains. Highway 220 runs past just north; access to the rock is via a short path from a rest area. The Sweetwater River flows close by to the west, providing a permanent water supply in this otherwise arid land - important for the early settlers on the Emigrant Trail.
