Reached by a short spur path off the Cohab Canyon Trail, Fruita Overlook is an excellent viewpoint at the edge of the 400 foot high Wingate sandstone cliffs lining the Fremont River and highway UT 24; to the west, the road passes through woodland and orchards around the historic village of Fruita, site of the NPS visitor center and the start of the park scenic drive. To the east, road and river cut through the main part of Capitol reef, where the red Wingate rock is capped by large white domes of Navajo sandstone.
