Escobaria tuberculosa
Escobaria tuberculosa - whitecolumn foxtail cactus, near the start of the Hot Springs Road

Full size photograph (900 x 675 pixels)

Escobaria cacti, known as pincushions, are characterized by the dense covering of short, whitish spines that completely hide the stems, and can make different species difficult to identify. Most form small clusters, and produce pinkish flowers near the growing tip. In Big Bend National Park, escobaria tuberculosa is found at lower elevations, on gravel slopes and limestone terraces.
