Echinocereus stramineus
Echinocereus stramineus - strawberry cactus, along the Marufo Vega Trail

Full size photograph (900 x 675 pixels)

Found in most areas of Big Bend from the low deserts to mountain slopes up to 5,000 feet, echinocereus stramineus forms large clumps up to 3 feet across, and produces particularly large and colorful flowers in spring. Spines are long, light brown (red at the growing tip), and densely packed, nearly obscuring the green stems.
