Echinocereus enneacanthus
Echinocereus enneacanthus (strawberry hedgehog cactus), along the trail to Devils Den

Full size photograph (900 x 675 pixels)

This clump-forming cactus is common across lower elevations of Big Bend National Park, where the large mounds may be several feet across, composed of hundreds of individual stems bearing many spines, yellow to grey in color. Like all echinocereus species the pink flowers are big, up to 4 inches across, numerous, and long lasting, appearing throughout spring and early summer.
