Plateau Point, Grand Canyon
PreviousThe inner canyon gorge, west of Plateau PointNext

Many people's first hike into the Grand Canyon is along the Bright Angel Trail, perhaps as far as Indian Gardens after 4 miles - this is the third location were drinking water is available. Past here the trail crosses the Tonto Bench and descends a fairly enclosed canyon to the river, which is followed upstream a short distance, as far as a suspension bridge leading to Phantom Ranch on the north side. A spur trail across the bench leads to an excellent overlook (Plateau Point), still 1,300 feet above the river, from where several miles of the lower granite gorge is visible.
